FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT SMH EMPLOYMENT
Do I need to be a member of the union in order to be hired into a field role?
We are a union contractor, however each year we encourage hard-working individuals, without a union affiliation, to apply for field roles and we help support their union membership and will work with the State of MN to get them enrolled into the On The Job Trainee (OJT), program.
What is the typical work schedule and are overtime opportunities available?
During the busy season (April – November) working hours depend heavily on the project type and timeline. Field employees will occasionally be asked to work a Saturday and overtime opportunities are prevalent. Overtime payrates follow the respective union overtime rules.
How are job assignments and site location determined?
At the time of hire, employees will be notified of the current work location and job assignment. The scope of work and project timeline will determine the assignment and site location.
What types of construction projects will I be working on?
S.M. Hentges and Sons Inc has a large portfolio of project types including bridge work, sewer, water and utilities, asphalt, concrete, dirt work, excavation and site-prep. We pride ourselves on possessing the expertise required to conduct the majority of jobsite work ourselves without the need to bring in multiple subcontractors. This allows our employees to see all aspects of a project from start to finish.
Is there a general application for field positions that I can complete even if there aren't open roles?
Excellent question. Yes, there is a general field role application for SMH and SMH West. You can Complete the General Job Application on the SMH Jobs Page.
Is there room for advancement?
Yes, SMH is a strong believer in cultivating and developing our existing team members. There's a strong history of SMH Team Members not only growing within the department they start in, but in some cases growing their professional experience across different departments.
